America likes to consider itself the land of opportunity. Native Americans were long kept out of that loop unfortunately. Things are changing though. Indigenous natives are finally starting to establish their own economic clout through a number of different ways, and the business world is quite aware of this. As such, they are now teaming up with a number of native societies in order to offer Natives the opportunity to get business degrees.
For example, there’s the Ford Motor Company Tribal Scholarship. To apply, the student must be enrolled in a math, science, teaching/training, or business program at a recognized university. Applicants must be at least a sophomore and have a 3.0 grade point average. This program is open to Native, Hawaiian, and Alaskan Americans and can go as up to $5,000. Another is the Morgan Stanley Tribal Scholars Program, which is good for both tribal colleges and universities. Like the previous award, the student must have a 3.0 grade average but can be either an undergraduate or post-graduate. He or she must also be going for either a financial or business degree. It awards $2,500 a year to Native, Alaskan and Hawaiian Americans.
One of the first programs is the Catching The Dream MESBEC Program (formerly Native American Scholarship Fund). To apply, a student must be at least 25% Native American. One can major in engineering, math, science, or business. Awards can go up to $5,000 per academic year and are given both on merit as well as how the student will improve the lives of the Native American people. Take advantage of online certificate programs to help you realize your dreams.
The American Indian Fellowship in Business Scholarship is open to college juniors, seniors, or post-graduates. To apply, students must provide their academic transcripts. They also must provide why they are pursuing an advanced education as well as plans about what they will do upon completing their degrees. They must also provide a separate essay on how they will use their education to benefit the Native American community. A personal resume, including personal experiences and what challenges they’ve overcome is also needed. The award will be based on financial records supplied.
It is quite natural for any business major to want to go on for an MBA or MS in some form. As such, students should look into the AIGC Fellowship Program. Both graduating seniors and post-graduates can apply. In 2010, the AIGC provided over $1.2 million dollars to 350 students, with the amounts again dependent on financial need.
It should be remembered that these plans can go a long way towards paying one’s tuition. At the same time, no business major should restrict his or her revenue sources to these plans alone. In fact, most of these programs actually require students to fill out a FAFSA form and also apply for a Pell Grant and any other assistance they can get.
It’s long been known that as a minority of one group or another starts to obtain financial equality, they do so because members of their group had the business education to help guide them. In this way, Native Americans are no different from any other group. Students who choose to earn online degrees have the ability to work sooner. Taking online college classes will save more time and money.
