Educational Scholarships Are Available To Auto Engineers
Less than five years ago, the car industry was facing an incredible crisis and needed a government bailout to survive. These days, it’s a completely different picture, thanks to investment into energy efficient cars as well as expansion into major international markets such as China and some other countries.
Along with these changing times, the industry realizes it is going to need new personnel in order to meet this potential gold mine. This means finding and training a lot of young people. A big provider of these scholarships is a prominent American car manufacturer, who retooled its philanthropic foundation to include scholarships and grants as a way of meeting this personnel overhaul.
For starters, the company teamed up with the Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME) to create a number of STEM-related plans. For example, there is the SME/Ford PAS Scholarship. It starts with a special group of classes being taught in high school under the banner of the Partnership for Advanced Science. Three students who graduate this plan with a 3.0 averages or better then receive a scholarship of $10,000. If you don’t go to a PAS, you can still apply for the SME E/Henry Ford Academy Scholarship. It also contributes $10,000 scholarships to students with a 3.0 who are interested in the automotive field. Get assistance from government grants and attain useful skills.
The company is also addressing their minority recruitment with a group of scholarships. The American Indian College Fund targets Hawaiians, Alaskan, and Native Americans. It will provide $10,000 to students enrolled in a four-year degree program. For those leaning toward two-year degrees, it created the Tribal Scholarships. It is only open to Native Americans and awards $5,000. The HSF/Ford Motor Company Scholarship if for Latin American students and targets high school graduates enrolled in a four-year program; they receive $2,500. On top is the Hispanic College Fund/Ford Mi Fuerza plan. It is wider based and offers anywhere from $500 to $5,000.
The Automotive Hall of Fame is another group worth looking into. It has about a dozen different programs at its disposal. They may not be quite as generous as the car-maker noted above, but they can still help.
Its main package is the Automotive Educational Fund, which awards 19 scholarships of $2,000 each. To apply, a student needs a 3.0 grade point average out of high school, two letters of recommendation, and enrollment in an accredited and recognized college program. Another is the Larry Averill Memorial. Students also need a 3.0 average, but can go for either a two or four-year degree in a car-related field of study. If accepted, they will get $1,500. Now remember, these are just two of the plans the Hall of Fame offers. A little research should help you find the right one.
So, as one can see, the automotive industry itself realizes that with these changing times it will need personnel who are both young and open-minded enough to meet expectations.
