Ways to manage your debts

If your debts are becoming difficult to manage, you may need to look at getting outside help to organise a way to repay them. There are a number of debt management solutions out there, but everyone\’s debts are different and what is right for you will depend very much on your individual circumstances.

An Informal Arrangement, also known as an IA, is a fairly risk-free option to make your debts more manageable. You figure out exactly how much you can afford to pay back each month, then write to the companies you owe money to, asking them to accept this amount of repayment. However, by its nature this is not a formal agreement and they do not have to accept. You can organise an IA yourself or you can find companies that will help you with it for free.

Debt management companies can also offer other solutions to help with your debts. They can negotiate with your creditors and often turn multiple repayments into a single payment each month that you can manage. Be aware that some companies will charge a fee for this service, but again you can find some that will do it for free- your local Citizens Advice bureau should be able to give you more guidance.

If you owe a lot of money that you are really struggling to repay, there are more drastic options available, but these do carry consequences. You could arrange an IVA, which is a formalised agreement to pay back what you owe over a certain period of time. You will need a certified company to arrange this for you though and they will charge. It can also affect your credit rating and the time periods of the agreements can be long. Bankruptcy is something to consider only if you have tried all other options and you still cannot repay your debts- it is a serious arrangement that is not to be taken lightly.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list and there are many other options available to manage your debts. The main thing is to do your research- there is no standard solution for debt and what is right for someone else may not suit you. If you stay positive and look into all the options though there should be a way out that works for you.
