Financial aid as some people call it is monies that can be acquired to help pay for educational expenses. The US Department of Education offers the most widely known form of financial aid, which is called the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant, abbreviated BEOG or the Pell grant as it is commonly known. There are other forms of financial aid to help pay for higher education.
There are three different segments to the BEOG. The first part is a grant. This kind of funding is free and does not have to be repaid. It is usually given to people with low incomes who have no chance of obtaining higher education because of the lack of money. There is funding for outstanding achievement as well. The US government also offers a SEOG which stands for Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant.
The second part is the offering of low interest loans. There are two main loans offered by the US government, they are the Federal Plus Loan and the Federal Stafford Loan. The interest on these loans don\’t start to accrue until after graduation. Then sometimes a person can have four years to start paying the payments.
The third type of financial aid is work study. Work study is a program where the college will give a student a part time job to help them with everyday expenses. The job will be scheduled around the students academic schedule and the pay is usually competitive with jobs in the community.
Many state governments offer grants and work study also. Colleges will help needy students with tuition waivers, book discounts or waivers, merit scholarships, and loans of their own. If a person needs more funds, they can apply at large banking institutions for educational loans as well.
Non-profit organizations like churches, professional groups and corporations offer scholarships and various forms funding for education. There are also individuals who help students in their community to realize their educational dreams. Check online, the local library and ask your friends, parents and teachers where to find money to attend higher institutions.
