Choosing From Certified Nurse Assistant Programs
Working as a CNA can be a fulfilling and rewarding profession and requires taking one of the available certified nurse assistant programs to become one. A CNA has a very demanding job. It is physically demanding due to the lifting of patients and walking of patients. They work under the supervision of a doctor or registered nurse. All of the patients daily care falls to them. They feed them, clothe them, wash and groom them. The CNA will also assist patients with going to the bathroom, whether in the bed or out. They are responsible for informing their supervisor of changes in condition, eating habits or anything else going on with a patient.
Training can take six to twelve weeks. This is can be a quick step into a new career. The classes can be found at a community or vocational college and some hospitals offer the training. The program should also include clinical training. This is needed to give students the practice necessary to handle patients on their own. It may be good to go for the program that offers the most clinical hours.
In order to become certified, testing will have to be taken from the State Boards of Nursing. The board only accepts training from accredited schools. There may be a list of those local schools on their website. They will have other requirements as well and these vary by state. Contact the board directly to find out what they are. The exams are written, oral and practical. In the practical, the student will have to demonstrate some basic skills care.
Ask the perspective school if they have a career services office. It should do more than have resume writing workshops and teach a student how to interview. Ask if they have job postings and if employers are seeking the graduates of the school. Call local facilities and ask if they are familiar with the program and would they recommend it.
The salary for CNA\’s varies by state and the facility they work in. The pay is usually better at nursing homes than at hospitals. The BLS shows the median average pay to be from $9.71 to 13.76 per hour with the top earners receiving $15.97 an hour.
Certified nurse assistant programs are on campus and online. The classes that are online offer a real convenience but the State Boards of Nursing will have to be contacted to see if they will accept training that was done online.
