Who couldn\’t use an extra 100,000 free air miles? That\’s exactly what British Airways is offering for members of its Executive Club (frequent flier) program who apply for its Visa Signature card from Chase. If you hunt for free air miles deals, you might remember that this is the same incredible offer that the airline announced last year, then mysteriously withdrew.
You\’ll have to hurry. The offer ends on May 6, 2011. Details: www.britishairways.com/travel/creditcards/public/en_us?
You get a 50,000-mile bonus with your first purchase and another 50,000 miles if you spend $2,500 within the first three months after you activate the card. That\’s enough miles for a pair of round-trip coach tickets from New York to London or one round-trip Business Class ticket.
As with any reward ticket, you\’re free to choose to fly anywhere on British Airways\’ flight routes. This includes almost anywhere in Europe — Switzerland, France, Germany, you name it. Because BA is a member of the OneWorld Alliance, you can also redeem miles on any of those partner airlines, including Iberia, JAL, American, Cathay Pacific, Qantas and LAN
The card costs $95 a year, not bad for all those miles, but the fine print says: \”You will first be considered for a Visa Signature card. If you do not qualify for that product, you will automatically be considered for a Visa Platinum card, which has different fees, benefits and credit availability.\” Before you activate your card, make sure that it\’s the Signature. While this provision may seem like a bait and switch, half a dozen friends of mine did get their Signature card.
If you have an active British Air Visa card, you cannot get in on this opportunity. It\’s for first-time new accounts only. You must be an Executive Club member as well, but can join just before applying for the card.
British Airways also has higher-than-average \”prices\” for some awards, and much higher than usual \”fees and surcharges\” on their free tickets. On the plus side, I have found it easier to book award seats and get upgrades on BA than most carriers, and it has plenty of U.S. gateways to start your journey.
